60th ANNUAL NATIONAL SCHOOLS SWIMMING CYCLING TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIP COMMENCES TODAY WITH OPENING CEREMONY


The 60th National Schools’ Cycling, Swimming and Track and Field Championships was Sunday Evening,November 27th,2022 declared opened by the Honourable Prime Minister, Brigadier (rt’d) Mark Phillips at the National Track and Field Center, Leonora, West Coast Demerara.
Delivering the Feature Address, Prime Minister Phillips stated that the Government recognizes that Sports is important to the development of Guyana. He further reiterated the Government’s commitment to the development of sporting Facilities across the Country.

The Honourable Minister of Education, Madame Priya Manickchand, also addressed the Ceremony where She stated that the National Schools’ Championships is part of the Ministry’s Plan to produce well rounded Students.
This Nationals really emulates exactly what we want to do nationally across the Country. That is to give each Child participating in the School System, the best chance they have to be whatever it is they want to be, and we want to make sure that we create, and develop not only academically strong Students, but Students who are all rounded, and confident, and can hold their own on any Field.


She added that very soon, Schools across the Country will see the establishment of not only continuing and continuously strong academic Programs, but Programs that allow Students more freedom to explore their different Skills.
Chief Education Officer, Dr Marcel Hutson also urged the participating Athletes to do their best in representing their Districts.



Meanwhile, President of the Guyana Teachers’ Union, Mr Mark Lyte noted that the hosting of the 60th Nationals was a culmination of hardwork, and collaboration between the Ministry of Education, and GTU.
Over the next few Days, Student and Teacher Athletes will be competing in the Cycling, Swimming, Track and Field.

To mark the official commencement of the Championships, the Cauldron was lit by Athletes from District Ten who are the defending Champions.
